Istighfar — seeking forgiveness: meaning, forms, and daily practice.
Istighfar — seeking forgiveness from Allah — is one of the most recommended acts of worship in the Quran and Sunnah. The Prophet ﷺ made istighfar more than 70 times every single day. This guide covers the meaning, the most authentic forms, and how to build a daily istighfar practice.
What does istighfar mean?
The Arabic word istighfar comes from the root غ-ف-ر (gh-f-r), meaning to cover, protect, or forgive. Istighfar is the act of asking Allah to cover one's sins and shortcomings. The most basic form is simply saying Astaghfirullah (أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ) — "I seek the forgiveness of Allah."
Why did the Prophet ﷺ make istighfar so much?
Abu Hurairah (RA) narrated: I heard the Prophet ﷺ say: "By Allah, I seek Allah's forgiveness and turn to Him in repentance more than seventy times a day." (Sahih al-Bukhari)
This is remarkable because the Prophet ﷺ was the most forgiven of all people — his sins, past and future, were forgiven (Quran 48:2). Yet he made more istighfar than anyone. Scholars explain this as: gratitude for blessings he could never fully repay, humility before Allah's infinite greatness, and teaching his ummah by example that forgiveness-seeking is never for the guilty alone — it is for everyone, always.
The forms of istighfar
1. The simple form
أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ Astaghfirullah — "I seek the forgiveness of Allah." Sahih al-Bukhari · Repeated throughout the day
2. With tawbah (repentance)
أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ Astaghfirullaha wa atubu ilayh — "I seek the forgiveness of Allah and turn to Him in repentance." Sahih al-Bukhari · The Prophet ﷺ said this 100× in a single sitting
3. Sayyid al-Istighfar — the master of forgiveness
There is no god but You. You created me and I am Your servant. I keep Your covenant and pledge to You as best I can. I seek refuge in You from the evil of what I have done. I acknowledge Your blessing upon me and acknowledge my sin, so forgive me — for none forgives sins except You." Sahih al-Bukhari — Shaddad ibn Aws (RA)
The Prophet ﷺ said: "Whoever says this in the morning with conviction and dies that day before evening, will be from the people of Paradise. And whoever says it in the evening with conviction and dies before morning, will be from the people of Paradise."
The benefits of istighfar
The Quran and Sunnah link istighfar to remarkable worldly and spiritual benefits:
- Relief from distress: "Whoever makes istighfar abundantly, Allah will grant him a way out of every worry and distress, and provide for him from where he does not expect." (Sunan Abi Dawud)
- Rain and provision: Prophet Nuh (AS) told his people to make istighfar: "He will send rain upon you in torrents, and will give you increase in wealth and children." (Quran 71:10-12)
- Forgiveness of sins: "Allah is more pleased with the repentance of His servant than a person who loses his camel in a desert and then finds it." (Sahih Muslim)
A practical daily istighfar routine
