Tasbih Fatima:
the 33-33-34 story, sequence and how to count.
Tasbih Fatima is the name scholars give to the 33-33-34 dhikr sequence the Prophet ﷺ taught to his daughter. It is the most widely practised post-salah dhikr in the world — and one of the most richly rewarded acts a Muslim can do after prayer.
The story behind Tasbih Fatima
Ali ibn Abi Talib (RA) narrated: Fatimah (RA) came to the Prophet ﷺ complaining of the hardship of hand-grinding grain. She heard that he had received some captives, so she came to ask him for a servant. She did not find him, so she told A'isha (RA). When the Prophet ﷺ came home, A'isha told him. He came to us when we had already gone to our beds. Ali said: We wanted to get up but he said, "Stay where you are." Then he sat between us, and I felt the coolness of his feet on my chest. He said: "Shall I not tell you of something better than what you asked for? When you go to bed, say SubhanAllah 33 times, Alhamdulillah 33 times, and Allahu Akbar 34 times. That is better for you than a servant." (Sahih al-Bukhari, Sahih Muslim)
The sequence
سُبْحَانَ اللَّهِ SubhanAllah — Glory be to Allah 33 times
الْحَمْدُ لِلَّهِ Alhamdulillah — All praise is for Allah 33 times
اللَّهُ أَكْبَرُ Allahu Akbar — Allah is the Greatest 34 times
Total: 100. The hadith narrated in Sahih Muslim adds a closing phrase to complete the 100: La ilaha illa Allah wahdahu la sharika lah, lahul-mulku wa lahul-hamd, wa huwa 'ala kulli shay'in qadir — bringing the full sequence to 100 phrases of remembrance after each prayer.
When to recite it
The Tasbih Fatima is reported in hadiths as a recommendation for two separate contexts:
- After every obligatory salah — this is the most widely known context. "Whoever says this after every obligatory prayer, his sins are forgiven even if they are like the foam of the sea." (Sahih al-Bukhari)
- Before sleep — the original advice the Prophet ﷺ gave to Fatimah (RA) was specifically at bedtime, to give her strength for the next day. Many Muslims say it both after salah and before sleeping.
Why does Allahu Akbar get 34, not 33?
The total of 100 is deliberate. SubhanAllah and Alhamdulillah each get 33, and Allahu Akbar gets 34 to complete 100. Some narrations give different distributions (e.g., 33-33-33 with a closing La ilaha illa Allah), but the most widely transmitted version is 33-33-34. All are authentically narrated; scholars consider whichever version a Muslim follows to be valid.
Counting it: fingers vs digital counter
This sequence is where most people lose count. Was that 32 or 33? Should I start over? The Prophet ﷺ recommended counting on fingers — which have the advantage of being always present and free from distraction. A digital tasbeeh counter offers a different advantage: automatic switching at 33 so you never have to think about the number at all. Use whichever helps you stay most present in the meaning.
