Astaghfirullah meaning: what it means and when to say it.
Astaghfirullah is one of the most repeated phrases on a Muslim's tongue. You hear it after a mistake, in moments of regret, and woven through everyday speech. But what does Astaghfirullah actually mean, and when should you say it? Here's the simple answer, the word broken down, and the longer forms.
Astaghfirullah meaning in English
Astaghfirullah (أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ) means "I seek the forgiveness of Allah."
أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ Astaghfirullah — "I seek the forgiveness of Allah."
It is the simplest form of istighfar — the act of asking Allah to cover and pardon your sins and shortcomings. Saying it is both an admission of human weakness and an expression of hope in Allah's endless mercy.
The word, broken down
Astaghfirullah is two parts joined together:
- Astaghfiru (أَسْتَغْفِرُ) — "I seek forgiveness." It comes from the Arabic root غ-ف-ر (gh-f-r), which means to cover, shield, or forgive.
- Allah (اللَّهَ) — the One you are asking.
So the full sense is: "I ask Allah to cover my sins and forgive me." The root meaning of "covering" is beautiful — a forgiven sin is not just erased but veiled by Allah's mercy.
When do Muslims say Astaghfirullah?
- After a sin or mistake — the most natural moment, big or small.
- As a reflex — on hearing or seeing something sinful, or even as a gentle expression of disapproval.
- Three times after every salah — the first words the Prophet ﷺ said after the closing salam (Sahih Muslim).
- In the morning and evening adhkar — including the great Sayyidul Istighfar.
- Throughout the day — simply to stay in remembrance of Allah.
The longer forms
With repentance
أَسْتَغْفِرُ اللَّهَ وَأَتُوبُ إِلَيْهِ Astaghfirullaha wa atubu ilayh — "I seek the forgiveness of Allah and turn to Him in repentance." — Sahih al-Bukhari
Astaghfirullah al-Azeem
Some add al-Azeem (the Most Great): Astaghfirullah al-Azeem — "I seek the forgiveness of Allah, the Most Great." It is a valid and common form, though the plain Astaghfirullah is what appears most in the authentic narrations.
Sayyidul Istighfar — the master form
The most complete istighfar is Sayyidul Istighfar, "the master of seeking forgiveness." The Prophet ﷺ said whoever says it in the morning or evening with conviction and dies that day or night will be from the people of Paradise.
How many times should you say Astaghfirullah?
There is no upper limit. The Prophet ﷺ — already forgiven — sought Allah's forgiveness more than seventy times a day, and in another narration, a hundred. Many Muslims keep a daily target of 100× and count it with a tasbih so they never lose their place.
